Emerging periodically, influenza pandemics are both unpredictable and unavoidable. Stay up-to-date and Plan for the Avian Flu.

Currently, the WHO (World Health Organization) Global Influenza Preparedness Plan has the World Alert Level set at: PHASE THREE - thereby indicating disease is being caused by a new flu virus sub-type but not yet widely spreading throughout people.

According to World Health Experts (with the last 'Hong Kong flu' pandemic occuring in 1968-69), we are now closer to the next flu pandemic than at any time before.

Preparedness planning will be key when effectively and efficiently responding to pandemic influenza outbreaks and mitigating against the potentially devastating medical, social and economic impacts which will cause disruption to the delivery of essential services.
Previous International experience dealing with other recent threats, such as SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), has lead to the development of an Influenza Pandemic Preparedness Planning Checklist by the WHO for it's Member States - better enabling countries to recognize and manage a pandemic in an attempt to reduce virus transmission, and thus minimalizing the related impacts.
The WHO Checklist includes:
|
1. Preparing for an Emergency
2. Surveillance
3. Case Investigation and Treatment
4. Preventing Spread of the Disease in the Community
5. Maintaining Essential Services
6. Research and Evaluation
7. Implementation, Testing and Revision of the National Plan

What Can You Do? ...to Protect Yourself, Family and Friends?
As a first precaution, it is recommended that you try to avoid places currently experiencing avian flu problems (such as Thailand, China, Cambodia, Vietnam, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia and Laos). While it may not always be possible to stay away from 'hot zones', it is best you always pay close attention to your personal hygiene. You should wash your hands often and thoroughly, especially when handling eggs and uncooked poultry, as much as you should clean and disinfect your clothing and footwear to prevent further cross-contamination.
There are other preventative measures you should also follow, such as: get a regular flu shot (as there is no avian flu shot/vaccine) to help boost your overall immunity; cover your mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing; and stay home from work and away from others when you are sick.
